| The
Pontac family is responsible for the renown of Bordeaux's
quality wines with the founding of Chateau Haut-Brion in 1530 by
Jean de Pontac (father of Raymond). They waited four generations before the
Chateau gained an international aura, with Arnaud de Pontac,
first speaker of the Bordeaux Parliament.
After the Great Fire of London in
1666 he built a famous restaurant called "Pontac's
Head" where his high quality wine was sold at 4 times the
price of other Bordeaux wines.
Thus was born the first Bordeaux
"Grand Cru." |
